Getting product photos past Amazon

If you are cutting out product shots for a marketplace listing, the specification is stricter than most sellers realise, and Amazon's automated checks enforce it.

The main image needs a pure white background. Not off-white, not cream, not near-white. Pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255. Amazon's systems flag or suppress listings where the background drifts off that exact value, which is a common way a perfectly good photo gets rejected.

The product also has to fill at least 85% of the frame. Cut out your subject, then crop in so it dominates the image rather than floating in space.

A few more that catch people out: the longest side should be at least 1,000 pixels for the zoom function to activate, with 2,000 or more recommended. No text, logos, watermarks, or inset images on the main shot. Those rules relax for your secondary images, where lifestyle photos and infographics are fine.

So the workflow is remove the background, place the cut-out on a pure white canvas, crop to 85% fill, and export at 2,000 pixels or better.

Why hair and fur come out rough

Every background remover struggles at the same place, and it is worth knowing why rather than assuming the tool is broken.

Most edges in a photo are a clean handover. This pixel is jumper, the next one is wall. A strand of hair is not like that. It is thinner than a pixel in places, so a single pixel holds some hair and some background mixed together. Deciding whether that pixel is subject or background has no correct answer, because it is genuinely both.

Handling it properly needs alpha matting, which estimates what fraction of each edge pixel belongs to the subject and sets partial transparency to match. That is a much harder problem than drawing a line, and it is where the visible difference between a rough cut-out and a convincing one lives.

Flyaway hair, fur, fine fabric mesh, motion blur, and out-of-focus edges all hit the same limitation. Backlit hair against a bright window is the worst case there is.

What makes a photo cut out well

Contrast does most of the work. A dark jacket against a dark sofa gives the tool nothing to work with. Put the same jacket against a pale wall and it separates cleanly.

Sharp edges beat overall image quality. A slightly noisy photo with crisp outlines cuts better than a pristine one that went soft at the boundary, because the tool is looking for the boundary and not for beauty.

Even lighting helps. Hard shadows falling across the line between subject and background hurt, and so does anything in the background the tool might reasonably read as a second subject. A person standing behind your person is a genuinely ambiguous case.

Products on a plain surface are easy. That is exactly why studio product photography looks the way it does.

The transparency gotcha

Your cut-out is a PNG for a reason. JPG has no alpha channel, so it physically cannot store transparency.

Save or convert a transparent cut-out to JPG and the see-through areas do not stay see-through. They fill in, usually with black or white depending on the software, and there is no undo because the transparency information was never written to the file. People discover this after uploading and wondering why their product has a black rectangle behind it.

Keep the PNG as your working file. Convert to JPG only at the final step, after you have placed the cut-out on whatever background it is meant to sit on.

Why the cut-out file is bigger than the original

Delete most of an image and the file grows. It sounds wrong, and it catches everybody once.

PNG is lossless. It never throws away detail to save space, and that discarding is the whole trade a JPG makes in exchange for being small. Your cut-out also carries an alpha channel now. That is one extra value per pixel, recording how transparent it is. Less picture. More data per pixel. No lossy compression anywhere to offset any of it.

A 400 KB JPG coming back as a 1.5 MB PNG is completely normal. Composite the cut-out onto its final background, then convert to JPG or WebP, and the size drops right back.
