Area to buy adds your waste margin for cuts and spares. Boxes are rounded up to the next whole box. Leave coverage or price at 0 to skip the box count or cost. This is a planning estimate, always check the actual product packaging.

How to use this flooring calculator

  1. Units, choose feet or metres to match your tape measure and your flooring packaging.
  2. Room length and width, enter the two measurements of the room you are covering.
  3. Waste %, leave the default 10 percent or raise it for diagonal layouts and patterned floors.
  4. Coverage per box, enter the area one box or pack covers to get a box count, leave it at 0 to skip.
  5. Price per box, add the price of one box for a total cost estimate, leave it at 0 to skip.

How to estimate flooring

Start with the room area, which is simply length × width. A room that is 12 ft long and 10 ft wide is 120 square feet. Next, add a waste margin of around 10 percent to cover offcuts, trimming around door frames and the odd damaged plank, which turns 120 into about 132 square feet to buy. To find the number of boxes, divide that area to buy by the coverage per box printed on the packaging and round up to the next whole box, since shops sell full boxes only. Multiply the box count by the price per box for a quick budget figure.

The same method works for laminate, vinyl, engineered wood, solid hardwood and tile. Only the coverage per box changes between products, so swap that value in and the box count and cost update for you. For an L-shaped or stepped room, split it into rectangles, calculate each area, then add them together before entering the total here.

Note: This is an estimate to help you plan and budget. Always check the coverage and box quantity on the actual product, and consider buying one spare box from the same batch so future repairs match the colour and pattern.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate flooring area?

Multiply room length by room width. A room 4 m long and 3 m wide is 12 square metres. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles, work out each area and add them together.

How much extra should I buy for waste?

About 10 percent is a common starting point for cuts, mistakes and spares. Add more, around 15 to 20 percent, for diagonal layouts, busy patterns or rooms with many corners.

How many boxes do I need?

Divide the area to buy, including waste, by the coverage per box on the packaging, then round up to the next whole box. This calculator rounds up for you so you are never short.

Does this work for laminate, vinyl, hardwood and tile?

Yes. The maths is the same for all of them. Just enter the coverage per box for your chosen product to get an accurate box count.

Is my data uploaded?
