How to use this final grade calculator

  1. Current grade, enter your overall grade in the course so far as a percentage.
  2. Desired final grade, enter the overall grade you want to finish the course with.
  3. Final exam weight, enter how much the final is worth as a percentage of your total grade.
  4. Read the grade needed on the final and the status message, they update as you type.

Nothing is submitted or stored: the numbers never leave your device, so you can plan your study privately.

How the grade you need is calculated

Your overall grade is a weighted average. The work you have already done counts for everything that is not the final, and the final counts for its own weight. To find the score you need, the calculator rearranges that average. Writing the weights as decimals, the formula is:

needed = (goal - current × (1 - finalWeight)) / finalWeight

Here goal is your desired final grade, current is your grade so far, and finalWeightis the final exam weight. A final worth 30 percent gives a finalWeight of 0.30, so the rest of the course is worth 0.70. The calculator divides your percentages by 100 for you, so you can type plain numbers like 78 and 30.

A worked example

Suppose you have a 78% in the course so far, you want to finish with an 80%, and the final exam is worth 30% of your grade. With the weights as decimals, finalWeight is 0.30 and the rest is 0.70. Plugging in: needed = (80 - 78 × 0.70) / 0.30 = (80 - 54.6) / 0.30 = 25.4 / 0.30 ≈ 84.67. So you need about an 84.67% on the final to land your 80% overall. Because that is between 0 and 100, the status reads Achievable.

If the number had come out above 100, even a perfect final would not be enough and the tool would warn you. If it had come out at zero or below, your current grade would already guarantee the target, so the tool would tell you that you have already secured it.

Note: This tool assumes your course grade is a simple weighted split between the work so far and the final exam. If your syllabus uses dropped scores, curves or extra credit, treat the result as a close estimate rather than a guarantee, and check your own grading policy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what I need on the final?

Take your target grade, subtract your current grade multiplied by the part of the course that is not the final, then divide by the final exam weight: needed = (goal - current × (1 - finalWeight)) / finalWeight, with the weights as decimals.

What does the final exam weight mean?

It is the share of your overall grade that the final is worth. If the syllabus says the final counts for 30 percent, enter 30, and the rest of your work makes up the other 70 percent.

Why does it say I need over 100 percent?

If the required score is above 100, your target is not reachable with the final alone, because even a perfect exam will not raise your average enough. You would need extra credit or a lower target.

What if I have already secured my target?

If the number you need is zero or below, your current grade is already high enough that even a zero on the final keeps you at or above your goal.
