WebP has a size ceiling you can actually hit
WebP caps out at 16,383 pixels on a side. Not a guideline, a hard format limit, because the underlying VP8 bitstream stores width and height in 14-bit fields, and 214 minus 1 is 16,383. Google documents it in the WebP FAQ.
Most photos never come near it. Stitched panoramas, long screenshots and scanned architectural drawings do. If your image is wider than that, no tool on earth can save it as WebP, and the answer is PNG or JPG instead.
What is JPG?
JPG (also written JPEG) is the world’s most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to make photographs very small, but it can’t store transparency and re-saving repeatedly slowly degrades quality.
What is WebP?
WebP is a modern image format from Google that’s typically 25-35% smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality, with support for both transparency and animation. Some older software still can’t open it.

GIF transparency is the odd one out. A pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible, with nothing in between, which is why GIF logos often show jagged edges against a background they were not designed for. PNG and WebP both store 256 levels of transparency instead, so their edges blend properly.

What happens to my EXIF and location data?
It is dropped. The image is redrawn to a canvas and re-encoded, which carries the pixels across and leaves the metadata behind, GPS coordinates included.
