Why convert JPG to PNG?
Convert JPG to PNG when you want a lossless copy to edit without further quality loss, or a format that supports transparency for graphics work. The file will usually get larger.
This will not improve the quality
Worth being blunt, because the assumption is extremely common and costs people disk space for nothing.
PNG is a lossless format, so people reasonably expect converting into it to give them a better image. It does not. JPG already discarded detail when it was first saved, and that detail is gone. All the conversion does is preserve what remains, artefacts and all, in a format that happens to be lossless from this point forward.
You get a bigger file containing exactly the same visible image. Often several times bigger.
There is one genuinely good reason to do it anyway. If you are about to edit and re-save the image repeatedly, working in PNG stops each save shaving off a little more quality, which is what would happen if you kept editing the JPG.
What is JPG?
JPG (also written JPEG) is the world’s most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to make photographs very small, but it can’t store transparency and re-saving repeatedly slowly degrades quality.
What is PNG?
PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency support. It keeps every pixel perfect, which makes it ideal for logos, icons, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges, though files are larger than JPG.

GIF transparency is the odd one out. A pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible, with nothing in between, which is why GIF logos often show jagged edges against a background they were not designed for. PNG and WebP both store 256 levels of transparency instead, so their edges blend properly.
