PNG is a lossless format, so people reasonably expect converting into it to give them a better image. It does not. AVIF already discarded detail when it was first saved, and that detail is gone. All the conversion does is preserve what remains, artefacts and all, in a format that happens to be lossless from this point forward.

GIF transparency is the odd one out. A pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible, with nothing in between, which is why GIF logos often show jagged edges against a background they were not designed for. PNG and WebP both store 256 levels of transparency instead, so their edges blend properly.
